Glycine (Gly, G) – No side chain.
The absence of a side chain allows glycine to play an important role in forming turns and bends in a protein polypeptide. This glycine ion is an example of a zwitterion, which broadly means an ion which contains both positive and negative charge. All of the ions shown in these pages are thus zwitterions. Which atom in this ion carries a positive charge? Where would you find negative charge? (Hint: remember delocalization!)
